M-A060325-01 June 13th ERCOT Technical Workshop Regarding Measures to Facilitate Continued Reliable Integration of Data Center and Cryptomining Large Loads in the ERCOT Region

NOTICE DATE: June 3, 2025

NOTICE TYPE: M-A060325-01 Operations

SHORT DESCRIPTION: June 13th ERCOT Technical Workshop Regarding Measures to Facilitate Continued Reliable Integration of Data Center and Cryptomining Large Loads in the ERCOT Region

INTENDED AUDIENCE: All Market Participants, Transmission Service Providers (TSPs), and All Customers with operational or requested Large Loads

DAYS AFFECTED: June 13, 2025

LONG DESCRIPTION: On June 13, 2025, ERCOT will host a workshop to discuss additional measures that may be needed to address ride-through concerns associated with Data Center and Cryptomining Large Loads operating and interconnecting in the ERCOT Region.  As noted in ERCOT's May 16, 2025 presentation to the ERCOT Large Load Working Group (LLWG), ERCOT has recently observed several events involving the simultaneous loss of multiple Large Loads following transmission faults and is concerned that: 1) simulations using the dynamic models of these facilities do not indicate that they would trip for these faults; and 2) the size of these events will increase with the continued growth of Large Loads with insufficient ride-through capability.  ERCOT continues to assess the scope of this concern and will have more information to share at the workshop.

ERCOT anticipates that the workshop will address the following issues:

  • Further description of the reliability risks associated with Data Center and Cryptomining Large Load ride-through failures and potential mitigation options;
  • Need for, and process for obtaining, more accurate models of the ride-through capability of Large Loads;
  • Need for changes to the Large Load Interconnection process to assess the joint ride-through impacts of multiple Large Loads in an area; and,
  • Methods for determining System Operating Limits that may impact operation of Large Loads that cannot ride through common system events.

An agenda and more information about the workshop will be available on this page.
