M-A062118-03 FINAL Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) flow results posted

NOTICE DATE:  October 29, 2018

NOTICE TYPE:  M-A062118-03 Operations

SHORT DESCRIPTION:  FINAL Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) flow results posted

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Resource Entities and Transmission Service Providers (TSPs)

DAY AFFECTED:  October 29, 2018

LONG DESCRIPTION:  On July 2, 2018, ERCOT partially implemented Planning Guide Revision Request (PGRR) 057, Responsibilities for Performing Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Vulnerability Assessments. Specifically, paragraphs (1) and (2) of Section 3.1.8, Planning Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Activities, have been unboxed.  Remaining portions of PGRR057 will be implemented at a later date.  PGRR057 aligns the Planning Guides with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standard TPL-007-1, Transmission System Planned Performance for Geomagnetic Disturbance Events, by identifying responsibilities for performing studies needed to complete GMD vulnerability assessments.

Additionally, ERCOT posted preliminary GIC flow results in preparation to meet NERC Reliability Standard TPL-007-1, Requirement R5 and requested TSPs and REs provide comments on the preliminary GIC flow results by July 16, 2018.  ERCOT, in collaboration with the PGDTF, addressed the comments received from TSPs and REs and created the FINAL GIC flow results.

These FINAL GIC flow results have been posted as “GIC Transformer GIC Flow Information” reports (EMIL ID PG3-953-M, Report ID 15633) in the “Regional Transmission Planning (5 year Transmission Plan)” portlet on the Regional Planning page of the Market Information System (MIS) Secure Area.

Pursuant to paragraph (1)(d) of Planning Guide Section 6.11, Process for Developing Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) System Models, supporting models are available to TSPs in the “GIC System Models” reports (EMIL ID PG6-105-M, Report ID 14546) in the “Models” portlet on the Transmission Service Provider Information page of the MIS Certified Area.

In both locations, see file names that include the title “Final _Transformer_GIC_Flows”.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  In addition to TSPs and Resource Entities, this notice is also issued to compliance contacts for all Transmission Owners and Generator Owners registered with NERC.

PGRR057 and associated documents can be found on the ERCOT website.
