M-A062822-01 ERCOT TLS 1.0 and TLS1.1 protocol deprecation on ERCOT's External Web Services API

NOTICE DATE: June 28, 2022

NOTICE TYPE: M-A062822-01 General

SHORT DESCRIPTION: ERCOT TLS 1.0 and TLS1.1 protocol deprecation on ERCOT’s External Web Services API

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Market Participant personnel that administer programmatic access to ERCOT’s production and testing environments and User Security Administrators (USAs)

DAYS AFFECTED: August 23, 2022 and September 28, 2022

LONG DESCRIPTION: Due to changes in security industry standards, ERCOT is deprecating the TLS1.0 and TLS1.1 protocols used in communication to all programmatic access to ERCOT’s Production External Web Services API (MISAPI.ERCOT.COM and API.WAN.ERCOT.COM).

On August 23, 2022, ERCOT’s MOTE and RMTE environment will be updated to only allow the TLS1.2 protocol for all programmatic access.  ERCOT is making these changes available to the test environments to ensure that Market Participants have adequate time to test this new configuration.

On September 28, 2022, ERCOT will update the Production External Web Services API’s to only allow the TLS1.2 protocol for all programmatic access.

ERCOT’s MOTE and RMTE can be accessed through the following URLs.

Note that this effort causes no impacts to Market Participants that access the Market Information System (MIS) or other ERCOT websites through a web browser.

ACTION REQUIRED Market Participant personnel that administer programmatic access to ERCOT’s production and testing environments will need to ensure that only the TLS 1.2 protocol is used for connectivity to ERCOT.  ERCOT encourages Market Participants to adopt these changes prior to the dates listed as ERCOT already supports the TLS1.2 protocol.  Failure to make the required changes on the Market Participant side can cause connection errors and will prevent access to ERCOT’s External Web Services API’s.
