2019 ERCOT Black Start Training

Overview

 

2019 Black Start consists of the following courses:

 

2019 Black Start Fundamentals CBT Black Start Fundamentals is a mandatory Computer Based Training (CBT) course, designed to bridge the gap between generic restoration theory and ERCOT-specific requirements.
2019 Black Start Training This year’s annual Black Start Training covers applied system restoration principles, incorporating both lecture and simulation components relevant to ERCOT’s system restoration strategy. Current entity-specific Black Start plans will be executed during the simulation exercises allowing participants to perform their expected roles and functions. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to identify the roles of ERCOT, TOPs, QSEs, and Generation Operators.

 

Continuing Education Hour Information

A NERC Certified System Operator (NCSO) may receive up to 2 CEHs for the Black Start Fundamentals CBT, which must be completed prior to the on-site training event, and up to 25 CEHs for annual Black Start Training, including 16 simulation CEHs, credited toward maintenance of their NERC System Operator Certificate. All-day attendance and participation is mandatory.

Prerequisites

The Black Start Fundamentals CBT must be completed prior to the on-site training event.

Audience

The 2019 ERCOT Black Start Training is designed primarily for all TDSPs and TOPs as well as QSEs and Generation Operators who have contracted Black Start Resources as well as those who are in support roles that will be affected by a system wide blackout.

Early Registration opens December 21, 2018 and ends on January 21, 2019. The cost to attend is $500.

The fee for registration after January 21, 2019 is $550 per person.  

The Pilot Session is February 26-28, 2019. It is recommended that critical staff determined by the MP attend the pilot, but registered Authorized Representatives and Backup Authorized Representatives are not required.

Continuing Education

The 2019 ERCOT Black Start Training is recognized by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation as an approved learning activity for which NERC CE hours can be awarded, and that the provider adheres to NERC Continuing Education Program criteria.

NERC continuing education hours are available for this class. If you are a NERC certificate holder and complete the criteria requirements for the Black Start Fundamentals CBT, you may be awarded up to 2 CE hours in the category of Operating Topics. If you are a NERC certificate holder and complete the criteria requirements for the Annual Black Start Training you will be awarded 25 CE hours in the category of Operating Topics as well as 16 hours of Emergency Operations Simulation.
